If you haven’t spoken with your fedora-wearing, vape-puffing male friends lately, you might not have heard that Mad Max: Fury Road suffers from pretty unforgivable transgressions. Yes, despite being the best, most bonkers action movie in recent memory, apparently director George Miller cast women (!!!) in major roles. Not only that, these characters are strong, smart, feminine role models who help the film pass the Bechdel Test with flying colors. Obviously, this doesn’t jibe with the beliefs of men’s rights activists but nevertheless proved to be very popular among rational-thinking moviegoers.
As such, the new Mad Max has resurrected the “Hey girl” Ryan Gosling meme from years past. Featuring hunky photos of heartthrob Tom Hardy with sensitive, supporting messages to ladies, the photo series has inspired a new wave of motivational media called Feminist Mad Max with plot-themed captions. Underscoring feminine strength and equality in a post-apocalyptic hellscape, the results work just as well in a modern day setting. Also, it makes us want to see the movie a fourth time.
