The term “cult classic” gets thrown around a lot these days, usually to describe anything that wasn’t widely seen but has some vocal fans. There should be another word for that, because “cult” implies a whole other level of devotion. This list is about movies that inspire very unusual outpourings of support. Let’s put the “cult” back into “cult following.”
1. The Rocky Horror Picture Show
A phenomenon all its own, people show up in costume not to recite the lines of the movie, but to perform a whole second script of callbacks – and occasionally throw things at other people.
2. Star Wars
Yeah, yeah, it’s a pop culture staple, not a “cult” film, but come on – there’s an entire global group of people who dress up as Stormtroopers called the 501st Legion. It’s twelve steps beyond.
3. The Big Lebowski
The Coen Brothers comedy about The Dude has inspired an annual festival full of trivia contests and unlimited bowling, and it really ties this list together.
4. Evil Dead 2
This cult was strong enough to get a third film, Army of Darkness made, and keep Bruce Campbell’s career afloat.
5. Hedwig and the Angry Inch
This musical saga about a frustrated German transgender rock star whose life thwarts her at every turn gets the shadow cast treatment as much as Rocky Horror does.
