We’re just going to put it out there: Ben Stiller’s dark comedy “The Cable Guy,” is one of the most underrated comedies of all time. If you haven’t seen it before, or just want to watch a great movie again, we’re showing it tonight at 8/7c. The movie stars Matthew Broderick as Steven, a good guy who just wants a good deal on cable. Is that too much to ask? Well, when your cable guy is Ernie ‘Chip’ Douglas (Jim Carrey) it is. When Steven’s engagement falls apart, he decides to revel in his renewed bachelorhood with the full cable package and as many television channels as possible. He has to keep up with “Maron,” after all. At the urging of his pal Rick (Jack Black), Steven bribes a weirdo cable installer for a sweet deal. Steven ends up with the channels and a new best friend to boot, whether he wants it or not. Carrey’s Chip is a lonely and psychotic man-child raised on television who soon starts stalking Steven with an alarming alacrity. His increasingly disturbing and eventually dangerous behavior repeatedly sabotages Steven’s attempts to woo back his ladylove (Leslie Mann), of whom the “cable guy” is soon extremely jealous. Things go from bad to worse and the result is pitch-black comedy that is simultaneously uncomfortable and wildly entertaining to watch.
Of course, Broderick has starred in some great comedies over his long career. Here are five of our favorite of his comedies:
5. “Biloxi Blues”
4. “The Freshman”
2. “The Cable Guy”
1. “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”
