You have to love a showman. Someone with a sense of pizzazz, able to razzle-dazzle people a crowd with minimal effort and keep them strung along for some sort of big reveal. In this case, Diddy (the rapper, not Donkey Kong’s young ward) tweeted on Wednesday: “MY BIG NEWS: So happy to announce that Im a series regular on DOWNTON ABBEY-my favorite show+i’ll be debuting a sneak peek tonight 12am PST!”
Because this was a thing that was said on the Internet and seemed completely implausible, it still seemed to have a shred of legitimacy. So much so that PBS actually responded to a Reuters inquiry about the Most Important News Story Ever: “It’s not true,” PBS spokeswoman Carrie Johnson said.
It was speculated that, perhaps, Diddy’s Twitter account had been hacked after the “Downton Abbey” logo was added as his avatar and background.
Turns out it was all a big tease for a new Funny or Die video that was uploaded Thursday morning. In it, Diddy explains how he’s actually been on the show for a while as its first black character — and that PBS announcement last week that it would be adding the first black character to the drama was therefore inaccurate.
“The only problem with this is I already broke down that barrier,” Diddy explains. “I’m making the announcement: I’m the first black cast member on Downtown… Downton… Downton Abbey, whatever the f*** it’s called. And I got the scenes to prove it.”
Here are those scenes:
