Peter Jackson has released the first video featuring a tease of “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.” It was taken from the hour-long fan event he held last week and, though it didn’t include the scene shown during that live meet-up, it did give a first look at Evangeline Lilly’s character Tauriel in action.
It also showed Orlando Bloom as Legolas and Luke Evans as Bard the Bowman during a behind-the-scenes shot. But one of the other high points of the video came when Stephen Colbert and Billy Boyd made surprise appearances to ask Jackson questions about the upcoming movie. While Colbert’s led to an awkward segue by Jackson, Boyd’s at least led to a reveal of Mirkwood Forest concept art.
As for that scene we didn’t get to see, MTV Movies Blog revealed a description of them last week. “In the clip, we follow Gandalf as a he walks through a dark cavern, along a ledge,” the site writes. “Eventually, he comes to what looks like a cage that has been broken from the inside. Radagast the Brown appears and asks why he’s there. Gandalf explains that something broke out of this cell and the others like it, hinting as the Nazgul.”
“The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” hits theaters on December 13, 2013, while “There and Back Again” comes out on December 17, 2014. Jackson has revealed that the first “Desolation of Smaug” trailer will come out over the summer.
