In advance of the highly anticipated 10th-anniversary deluxe reissue of the Postal Service’s Give Up (out 4/9 on Sub Pop), the band has teamed up with director Tom Scharpling for a fantastically funny new video.
The conceit is that Scharpling’s video is the lost audition tapes from way back in 2002 when Death Cab For Cutie’s Ben Gibbard teamed up with Jimmy Tamborello on the Postal Service project. Turns out that Gibbard only got the spot after a whole bunch of other people auditioned for the job, including some of our favorites like Marc Maron and “Weird Al” Yankovic, along with Aimee Mann, Helmet frontman Page Hamilton, Duff McKagan, Moby, Jon Wurster, Blink-182′s Tom DeLonge, and DC Pierson. Of course “Weird Al” Yankovic wins the day by playing the Postal Service’s hit “We Will Become Silhouettes” on accordion. If that Sub Pop exec knew anything about A & R he would have snapped Weird Al right up. Unfortunately, the so-called Sub Pop exec is none other than Jon Wurster of the Mountain Goats/Superchunk and is Scharpling’s partner on WFMU’s The Best Show.
