Of everything we’ve seen for “Star Trek Into Darkness,” the latest international trailer for the upcoming J.J. Abrams movie is by far the best. Not only does it give us more Benedict Cumberbatch and context for his character’s villainy, but it also gives us the film’s money shot: The Enterprise crashing into a planet after being severely damaged.
As the international trailer is meant to cater to a wider audience, it makes sense that this look at the movie would be especially plot driven. But never did we guess we’d see so much of Cumberbatch’s John Harrison and get an explanation of who he is (a top officer in Star Fleet) and why he and Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk are clashing (Kirk wants revenge). The story is sure to be much more complex than that, and we’re getting a “Skyfall” vibe from the project, but this video definitely made us more intrigued in the latest installment of Abrams’ “Star Trek” film series.
“Star Trek Into Darkness” is directed by J.J. Abrams and stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, Karl Urban, John Cho, Alice Eve, Cumberbatch and Bruce Greenwood. The film is slated to hit theaters in IMAX on May 15 and in regular cinemas on May 17. It’s been revealed that over 40 minutes of “Star Trek Into Darkness” will be shown in IMAX. Here’s the official plot synopsis:
In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes “Star Trek Into Darkness.” When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.
With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.
