“The Avengers” and “The Dark Knight Rises” among the most illegally downloaded movies of the year

Posted by on

Ah, the joys of the Internet. Every year a list of the most downloaded movies on the web are released, and we’re always surprised to find that it’s usually topped by a movie that didn’t do especially well in theaters.

This year, that honor goes to “Project X.” The found-footage comedy only made $100 million in theaters, but it did get 8.7 million downloads according to a report posted by Torrent Freak. Interestingly enough, of the movies that made the top 10, it was the film that did the worst in box offices.

Most of the movies don’t come as much of a surprise. “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol” was downloaded 8.5 million times, “The Dark Knight Rises” was downloaded 8.2 million and “The Avengers” was downloaded 8.1 million. Several of the films on the list didn’t even come out this year, like “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,” “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” and “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 1.”

While movie studios try to use these numbers as validation for cracking down on illegal downloads (and while some of those concerns are valid), there is an argument for the fact that people who downloaded these films probably wouldn’t have gone to see them in theaters anyways. Therefore, by downloading them, at least these movies reached a wider audience.

Regardless of where you stand on the torrent debate, it’s always fun to see which movies people cared enough about to download but not enough about to see in theaters at the end of each year. Here’s the full list:

1. “Project X”
Worldwide Gross: $100,931,865

2. “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol”
Worldwide Gross: $694,713,380

Your Portlandia Personality Test

The New Portlandia Webseries Is Going Your Way

Posted by on

Carrie and Fred understand that although we have so much in common, we’re each so beautifully unique and different. To help us navigate those differences, Portlandia has found an easy and honest way to embrace our special selves in the form of a progressive new traffic system: a specific lane for every kind of driver. It’s all in honor of the show’s 8th and final season, and it’s all presented by Subaru.

Ready to find out who you really are? Match your personality to a lane and hop on the expressway to self-understanding.

Lane 10: Trucks Piled With Junk

Your junk is falling out of your trunk. Shake a tail light, people — this lane is for you.

Lane 33: Twins

You’re like a Gemini, but waaaay more pedestrian. Maybe you and a friend just wear the same outfits a lot. Who cares, it’s just twinning enough to make you feel special.

Lane 27: Broken Windows

Bad luck follows you around and everyone knows it. Your proverbial seat is always damp from proverbial rain. Is this the universe telling you to swallow your pride? Yes.

Lane 69: Filthy Cars

You’re all about convenience. Getting your car washed while you drive is a no-brainer.

Lane 43: Newly Divorced Singles

It’s been a while since you’ve driven alone, and you don’t know the rules of the road anymore. What’s too fast? What’s too slow? Are you sending the right signals? Don’t worry, the breakdown lane is nearby if you need it.

Still can’t find a lane to match your personality? Check out all the videos here. And see the final season of Portlandia this spring on IFC.
