A sequel for 2010’s “Tron: Legacy” is still on the way.
Disney is moving forward with “Tron 3” by hiring a new writer, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. Jesse Wigutow is currently in negotiations to work on the script for the movie, which was previously drafted by David DiGilio.
Wigutow is a new Disney favorite, and is no stranger to the fantasy genre. He wrote “Eragon” and worked on the planned Relativity remake of “The Crow,” and also has been tapped by Disney to write “Peter and the Starcatchers.” None of his movies that have been released have been particularly impressive, but then again neither was “Tron: Legacy.”
The “Tron” reboot left the series on a big cliffhanger as Olivia Wilde’s Quorra was brought into the real world. It was also teased that Cillian Murphy’s character will have a larger role to play now that Garrett Hedlund’s Sam Flynn has found his nerve.
Those three actors will likely return for the forthcoming sequel, but what about Jeff Bridges as Kevin Flynn/Clu? Having him on board helped “Tron: Legacy” have some legitimacy, but might drag down a third movie. With that being said, we’d definitely love to see him have some role to play, and hopefully Daft Punk will become involved again as well.
No word yet on when “Tron 3” could come out, but “Tron: Legacy” director Joseph Kosinski is set to direct the film. He recently wrapped the Universal fantasy project “Oblivion.”
