Five favorite Jason Schwartzman roles

Posted by Melissa Locker on
At 2:15 p.m. ET today we are showing “Shopgirl,” a sweet and endearing film based on the novel by Steve Martin. The film stars Claire Danes as the titular shopgirl who catches the eye of two bachelors as she goes about her work. One, the older millionaire, is played by Steve Martin, the other a scruffy bachelor is played by Jason Schwartzman who vie for the affection of the lonely artist who pays her bills as a glove-selling retail queen. Even up against a cast of long-time professionals like Danes and Martin, Schwartzman more than holds his own in an understated by unequivocally authentic performance as Jeremy, a determined suitor. But that’s what we’ve come to expect from Schwartzman. From his very first role in Wes Anderson’s “Rushmore” or playing a scout leader in “Moonrise Kingdom,” Schwartzman has built a reputation of consistently delivering subtly brilliant performances, including a cameo on one of our favorite shows Freaks and Geeks. (Seriously, check him out in the Carded and Discarded episode.)
Here are five of our favorite Jason Schwartzman roles so far:
5. Louis XVI in “Marie Antoinette” (2006)
4. Gideon Graves in “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” (2010)
3. Jack in “The Darjeeling Limited” (2007)
2. Jonathan Ames in Bored to Death (TV series) (2009-2011)
1. Max Fischer in “Rushmore” (1998)
