Tonight at 8/7c we are showing the quirky, understated, hilarious family drama “Little Miss Sunshine.” While on the surface the movie’s plot — family road trips to a beauty pageant — sounds sweet, after you watch the movie you’ll agree that “sweet” is pretty much the least suitable adjective in the entire thesaurus. Think suicide, strife, porn, and death all wrapped up in a darkly humorous and strangely touching package. In other words: It’s great.
It stars Abigail Breslin as Olive, a girl with a dream that comes true when she gets a phone call from the Little Miss Sunshine Beauty Pageant
Olive has been working on her getting ready for the talent portion of the competition by getting dancing tips from her grandfather (Alan Arkin), who has choreographed a killer routine for her:
The family then get news that Olive’s uncle (Steve Carell) will be joining them on the road trip. You see, he can’t be left alone after a failed suicide attempt:
The whole family including her father (Greg Kinnear), mother (Toni Colette), brother (Paul Dano), grandfather and uncle all pile into the family’s van. It doesn’t go so well:
But the family sticks together, no matter what happens. Well, mostly anyway:
But all’s well that ends well and when it comes to “Little Miss Sunshine,” it ends with a dance party to “Super Freak,” which is, of course, absolutely perfect.
