The “Guardians of the Galaxy” are about to get a makeover.
Black list writer Chris McCoy has been hired to rewrite the script for the upcoming Marvel movie, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. Though none of his scripts have been turned into movies yet, McCoy reportedly has made quite a name for himself around Hollywood for his “quirky comedic bent.”
That might be exactly what this movie needs. Nicole Perlman wrote the previous draft of the script, but she is best known for writing non-fiction space films. That’s perfect for “Guardians” because it’s set in outer space, but it also definitely will need some levity in it to help average moviegoers get past its seemingly bizarre premise.
There’s also some new information out about the characters who will be included in the titular team. Here’s how THR describes the new Marvel characters we’ll meet in “Guardians”:
The movie’s lineup will include Drax the Destroyer, a human resurrected as a green warrior with the sole purpose of killing Thanos (the villain in the Avengers final-scene tease); Groot, a giant tree-man; Star-Lord, a gun-toting half-human/half-alien intergalactic vigilante; Rocket Raccoon, a genetically engineered animal with a knack for guns and explosives; and Gamora, the last survivor of her species who was saved by Thanos to be his assassin but now battles him.
“Guardians of the Galaxy” is due in theaters on August 1, 2014.
