Last week, Fiona Apple released a teaser trailer of the video for her latest single “Every Single Night.” And what a trailer it was. The brief clip showed Apple walking through the streets of Paris while a giant squid attacked the Eiffel Tower. It was brilliantly whimsical sneak peek that definitely left fans wanting more. Last night, the video premiered on our sister network the Sundance Channel and it was more eye-popping and fantastical than we even suspected.
The video was directed by Joseph Cahill, a filmmaker whose weirdly watchable videos for Raul Paz and Emily Loizeau effortlessly blend the sublime and the surreal and the video he made for Apple showcases that style perfectly. Within the confines of the three and a half-minute film, as Fiona sings, “Every single night/ Is a fight with my brain,” she wears an octopus hat, sings to the fishes, sweeps the floor with a hula doll and shacks up with a minotaur.
“Every Single Night” is the first single off Apples’s fourth studio album, the hilariously long titled “The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do .” The new album will be her first in nearly seven years and will be in stores on June 19 and she’ll be heading out on a North American tour to support the record. Before her musical hiatus, Apple’s last video was way back in 2006. The song was “Not About Love” and featured a young dancer with some wild moves. His name? Zach Galifianakis. While Galifianakis had some impressive dance steps, we think you’ll like this video even more.
