“U-571” is a World War II submarine movie, but it’s not your dad’s World War II movie and it probably won’t send grandpa off on a remembering jag (phew!) Instead it’s an action-filled thriller starring Jon Bon Jovi! Well, a bunch of other people, including Matthew McConaughey, Bill Paxton, and Harvey Keitel, but none of them can live on a prayer like Jon Bon Jovi and if you’re on a submarine deep under the murky water on a dangerous mission, don’t you want as much living and praying as you can get? Yeah, you do.
The film follows a wily (and attractive) bunch of American reconnaissance agents who upon learning that a German submarine is sinking set off on what was supposed to be a three-hour tour (just kidding!) but turned out to be a life and/or death mission. The sinking ship has an Enigma Machine onboard. While it sounds like a James Bond villain weapon, it is a special coding device that allows high-level Axis forces to send messages that can’t be read without a similar encryption mechanism. Obtaining a working Enigma device Machine be invaluable for the Allied war effort, so our boys on the U.S. sub are sent out to rescue the machine. However, German forces have already picked up the sub’s distress signal and are en route to rescue their comrades. The result is an action adventure film that is Movies That Go Bang! Bang! material all right.
