Meet John McClain. He’s having a bad time at his wife’s office Christmas party, not because of the tedious conversation or lousy hors d’oeuvres, but because the partygoers have been taken hostage by a group of terrorists headed by Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman), who plan to steal the 600 million dollars locked in Nakatomi’s high-tech safe. The only thing standing in the way of Gruber killing all the hostages and making off with the loot is McClain (Bruce Willis). And all he wanted for Chistmas was to get back together with his estranged wife. What happened instead is one of the great action movies of the 90s. Pitting a slightly crazed New York City cop armed with only a handgun and his chutzpah against a band of terrorists is action at its best. The film catapulted Willis from “that guy on Moonlighting” to one of the most in-demand film stars around. Plus, the movie kicked ass.
