Donald Sutherland has a career that spans five decades. He started out in television having roles on such notable series as “The Avengers” and “The Saint,” before shifting over to the silver screen. Fifty years of acting later, he shows no signs of letting up. He recently delivered a stellar performance as the pernicious President Snow in the blockbuster film, “The Hunger Games” and a comedic turn in “Horrible Bosses.” Sutherland has played everything from priests to a waiter (in “Kentucky Fried Movie,” no less) to soldiers and doctors and sometimes both at the same time. He’s a phenomenal actor who easily crosses from TV to movies and back again starring in both “Commander in Chief” and, more recently, “Dirty Sexy Money.” But the Golden Globe-winning actor has never taken himself too seriously, starring in comedies as well as dramas. On Saturday at 8/7c, we’re airing “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” a film that rolls Sutherland’s dramatic talent into a hilarious script. If you haven’t seen it, you should certainly tune in to see one of the great actors of our age face off against a whip-smart sass-mouthed valley girl-turned-vampire-hunter.
In honor of his appearance on our humble screen, here are five Donald Sutherland roles that we love (and no, we’re not including “Kiefer’s Dad” as one):
1. Hawkeye Pierce in “MASH”
2. John Klute in “Klute”
3. Dave Jennings in “Animal House”
4. Merrick in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”
5. Casanova in “Federico Fellini’s Casanova”
“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” airs on Saturday at 8/7c
