The indie darling “Beautiful Boy” is finally making its way to mass distribution. After premiering at the Toronto Film Festival in 2010 and receiving a limited theatrical run earlier this summer, the Michael Sheen and Maria Bello-starring drama is coming out on DVD on October 11.
For those uninitiated, “Beautiful Boy” starts off following a couple whose marriage has taken a turn for the worse and is on the verge of divorce. The drama escalates when they discover that their 18-year-old son, a college freshman named Sam, went on a shooting spree at his school and then turned the gun on himself.
The couple, Bill and Kate (Sheen and Bello), suddenly find themselves the centers of the media’s attention, becoming only “gunman’s father and mother.” Against that traumatic experience, they turn to each other and to their family (Alan Tudyk and Moon Bloodgood) to help cope with the tragedy and find understanding in it all.
“Beautiful Boy” is writen and directed by Shawn Ku and also stars Kyle Gallner and Meat Loaf. It won the Prize of the International Federation of Film Critics for Discovery at the 2010 Toronto Film Festival and the Golden Gryphon award at the Giffoni Film Festival.
