As you know because you have seen every episode (and if you haven’t because they don’t have TVs in the institution or something, there’s a marathon this Saturday), “Whisker Wars” is following a team of bearded warriors as they prepare for battle in the World Beard and Mustache Championships in Norway. As the underdogs in the global facial hair community, Beard Team USA has some catching up to do if they want to best the reigning German champions at the world competition. However, in Germany, bearding has a long and storied past with grooming tips and styling ideas passed down from father-to-son in a facial hair tradition that we assume extends back way past Archduke Ferdinand. We’re just guessing on the secret German beard initiation rites, but how else do you explain these guys? You don’t learn that on the back of a bottle of Aquanet. As you can tell, when it comes to freestyle beards, the wilder the better. And since they like to do things a little different in Texas, when the Austin Facial Hair Club’s freestyle beard ringer, Alex LaRoche, gets ready to compete he goes big.
