Some days you wake up feeling a little edgy. You want to tak a chance. You’re going to eat a cookie for breakfast in public. You’re going to dress like it’s casual Friday on a Wednesday. You’re going to listen to that one Miley Cyrus track that keeps “mysteriously” ending up on your iPod and you’re going to like it. Why not take a chance tonight and watch a 2009 Danish film about a mysterious mute Norse warrior only known as One-Eye? “Valhalla Rising” is an English language film, so it’s not all that risky, so you can eat transfats while you watch.
If you don’t know the film, “Valhalla Rising” follows One Eye (Mads Mikkelsen), a nameless, mute warrior who has become a slave to Barde (Alexander Morton), a wealthy Scotsman who took a shine to One Eye because of his remarkable fighting skills. One Eye doesn’t appreciate Barde’s unwanted advances, but doesn’t know how to express his emotions very well, so he kills him and sets off on his own. He is joined by a young boy (Maarten Stevenson) as he leaves Denmark behind in favor of freedom and adventure, in the form of a quest to Jerusalem with some friendly Christian Vikings. And that’s when the fun really starts. So take a chance. If you don’t, we’ll sing Abba:
