Spend Saturday with our Gus Van Sant Double Feature Extravaganza! Beginning at 2:15 p.m. ET you can see some of the finest work the director has put out to date. In “Paranoid Park”, which airs at 2:15 p.m. ET, Van Sant gives a dark portrait of adolescent longing and anxiousness. Alex, played by Gabe Nevins, is an unfulfilled and apathetic teenager who befriends a young anarchist at the local skater hangout a.k.a. Paranoid Park. When a tragedy befalls the teens, and the security guard chasing them, this traumatic experience is too much for Alex. Gus Van Sant offers up a mesmerizing yet bleak tale of youth gone wild and teen recklessness and consequences. It’s a gorgeous film done in the simultaneously lush and stark style that has marked Van Sant’s recent films, including “Last Days”. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for gossip rag fodder Taylor Momsen as Alex’s virginal girlfriend, Jennifer.
In “Last Days”, which airs at 4 p.m. ET, Gus Van Sant’s takes an anonymous look at the final days of a very famous rock star. Blake, played by Michael Pitt, is an eerie stand-in for Nirvana’s lead singer Kurt Cobain. He looks like him, he dresses like him, and he acts like him. The movie is languid and low-key to the point of almost being reminiscent of Andy Warhol’s movies. But instead of watching someone sleep for three hours you see a man looking for something, anything, to set himself free. The pace of the film is so slow that the audience ends up waiting for something to happen almost as much as the angst-filled protagonist. We all know how the movie ends, but as we travel with Gus Van Sant on his directed meditation on those sad final days, the journey almost makes sense of that tragic finale. Almost.
