The easiest way to describe the film “The Heroic Trio” is that it is a 1993 Hong Kong action film directed by Johnny To, starring Michelle Yeoh, Maggie Cheung, and Anita Mui as the titular trio. That said (and since one can never really use the word “titular” enough), the film is so much more than the titular trio. Directed by Johnny To (who has directed an impressive 52 titles and produced 62 more) the film follows a police detective hot on the trail of an invisible criminal kidnapping infants. On the path to justice and baby saving, he eventually encounters three female superheroes (one of whom looks very familiar) who are also battling the forces of evil. Behind the crimes is a mysterious subterranean supernatural Evil Master who has hatched a plot to create China’s next ruler by stealing babies. (What? It could happen.) Ardent fans of kung fu films, may not find this movie up to snuff, but fans of “Evil Dead 2” (and really, who is not a fan of that?) will find a kindred sense of camp, gleeful evil, tragedy, love, humor, and overwhelmingly wonderful absurdity. Seriously, just wait until the last scene. When you watch “The Heroic Trio” at 3:45 p.m. ET today you will get all that plus three hot ladies kicking serious ass.
