River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves were a match made in filmmaker’s heaven. Especially if that filmmaker is Gus Van Sant and he is making a film about hustlers on the mean streets of Portlandia …er, Portland. “My Own Private Idaho” airs on IFC tonight at 10:05 p.m. ET. While the film is a riff on Shakespeare’s “Henry IV, Parts I and II”, even Shakespeare himself would have a hard time recognizing the interwoven stories of River Phoenix’s Mike Waters — a narcoleptic hustler — and Keanu Reeves as a trust fund-kid-in-waiting as stand ins for the saga of King Henry. While Shakespearean scholars can play Spot the Bard, the rest of us can just sigh over the wellspring of talent that died with River Phoenix. Also, sad Keanu.
“My Own Private Idaho” airs on IFC Thursday, Apr. 7 at 10:05 p.m. ET and Sunday, Apr. 24 at 12:00 a.m. ET
