Sequels. You can’t escape ’em in movies or in video games. Or in mini-movies about video games, apparently. Enter, then, “The Brothers Mario 2: Kong Country,” a new YouTube video following the GTA-inspired hit that I wrote up a few months back.
The Kong crew is named, of course, after the extended ape family made famous in the “Donkey Kong Country” games. Using the ol’ “the enemy of my enemy is my friend” plot line lets them pulls in a ton of more obscure Mario universe characters, all to hilarious effect. Dodging the barrels, riding around on Yoshi and the Starman invincibility vests all take elements from the gameplay of classic Mario games and give them a pitch-perfect twist for a crime drama adaptation. Like the first installment of the hardcore Nintendo homage, Brothers Mario 2 gets tons of comedy mileage from the references it makes. Take that “Konnng!” scream at 1:36, which clearly riffs off of “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.” It’s a hoary nerd joke, but works because it’s unexpected (at least in a street crime/Mario context) and perfectly fits the uber-joke. My favorite gag–“Yo, Mario coming!”–calls back to “Yo, Omar coming” from “The Wire,” where the warning would clear the streets lest anyone run afoul of Michael K. Williams’ shotgun-wielding crook. And the last line of the thing is a killer, too. And, y’know, that “Do the Mario” rap ain’t too bad either.
