“Detention” Gets a Timeout at SXSW 2011

Here’s an appropriately chaotic interview for the chaotic high school film “Detention” by Joseph Kahn, who stopped by the IFC Crossroads House with his star (and executive producer) Josh Hutcherson and more cast members than we could fit on our couch, including Shanley Caswell, the film’s charmingly perturbed female lead, and Aaron David Johnson, “Detention”‘s dorky comic relief. I would try to explain what “Detention”‘s about but we’d be hear all night: in short, it’s a high school comedy and a slasher flick and a parody of high school comedies and slasher flicks. Kahn’s film, which he also co-wrote and financed with his own money, is a crazy, caffeinated collage of pop culture quotations that eventually reveals itself as a enormous (and enormously goofy) meditation on the cyclical nature of pop culture.
