Ari Hest’s new record “Sunset Over Hope Street” is primarily concerned with, as he puts it, the “unease” over the passage of time. I wouldn’t call it a sunny record, but it’s not without hope, as it’s title might suggest. There is however, no way to sugar coat this video for “Business Of America,” a sobering ballad about a shallow age and bottom lines.
“Gather up the goods like a good robot / It isn’t what you are it is what you got / Pay no attention to the dying man / If he ain’t got cash we won’t lend a hand,” Hest sings to images of America’s homeless and destitute. The video was directed by Phillip Montgomery, whose previous documentary “ReGeneration” (featured Noam Chomsky, and Talib Kweli with narration by Ryan Gosling) explored the cynicism and apathy prevalent in today’s youth. “Sunset Over Hope Street” released March 1, 2011 via Downtown Records’ Mercer Street imprint.
