The Smiths’ Unreleased Demos

Posted by Brandon Kim on
Stereogum has a scoop on a collection of Smiths bootlegs that turned up called Unreleased Demos & Instrumentals. These are the kind of tracks that can help a guy get over the often difficult, girly, Morrissey, hurdle and get into The Smiths in a heavy way.
They remind me of The Peel Sessions tracks the band did in May of 1983 with producer Roger Pusey (clearly one of the toughest names in the music biz) and of course, John Peel. The swagger, the rough around the edges unhinged whistling and howling — “What Difference Does it Make” and “Miserable Lie” come to mind — captured that day were awesome. Some of the takes on this collection are nearly as good. And Morrisey breaks into one of his fantastically random whistle solos on this version of “Death Of A Disco Dancer.” Very nice, very nice, very nice:
The Smiths — “Death Of A Disco Dancer (Monitor Mix)”
The Smiths — Paint A Vulgar Picture (Monitor Mix)”
