Lady Gaga and Justin Timberlake were both allegedly victims of a malicious computer virus which was designed to steal songs from their hard drives. German police are investigating a pair of dudes in the matter, named as Deniz A and Christian M, who apparently gained entry via a trojan horse which was attached to an mp3 that they had sent to the pop stars’ official email addresses, and that of their managers and record companies (Interscope and Jive, respectively).
The duo have had access for about a year and have prompted the artists to move up release dates to mitigate damage from the leaks — which one source says made the hackers around $13,000 in illegal sales before they were shut down.
In his defense, Deniz A was quoted in a German daily paper saying, “I’m a fan and I just wanted to have cool music. I’m no blackmailer.” Now kaput, he and his cohort could face up to five years jail time. [THR]
