Fanboy activism gets up-close and personal during the premiere of “The Fighter” at LA’s Arclight Theatre, as regards the recent casting of Mark Wahlberg as lead character Nathan Drake in “Uncharted.” There’s been a bit of gamer uproar over the fact that Fillion didn’t get the nod for the yet-to-lens adaptation of the PS3 action series.
Despite seeming a bit, er, nervous, Russell handles the ambush admirably–even if he seems to not know who Fillion is. (Some handler gamely jumps in to note that Russell had been sent the DVDs of Fillion’s audition. Uh, okay.) And the fan himself doesn’t seem too intrusive. But, really, let’s hope this doesn’t become a rising trend. It doesn’t make gamers look good, Hollywood decision-makers aren’t exactly in touch with grassroots campaigns and the filmmakers aren’t well-served by a public that second-guesses their decisions in actual physical space. Once the casting’s done, all we’re left with is to wait and see how everything turns out. As Russell himself says, it’s not a big deal. Until, of course, it is.
