R.E.M.’s Mike Mills talked to SPIN about ” Collapse Into Now,” their fifteenth studio album and revealed a few dietary details along with some attention grabbing guests.
Three of the album’s 12 tracks feature friends, with Eddie Vedder singing on “It Happened Today,” and Patti Smith on vocals on the album closer, “Blue.” Peaches appears on an as yet untitled song, “which Mills promises will feature the word ‘alligator’ in its title.”
The album, due out early 2011 is produced by Garret “Jacknife” Lee (U2), who is also in cahoots with R.E.M.’s Peter Buck in the Snow Patrol/Belle & Sebastian/She&Him supergroup, Tired Pony (whose debut concert we premiered here).
Mills said they set up an enjoyable recording schedule across multiple cities with plenty of time to eat and make merry. “It’s really important to go out, get great food, shrug off the debris of the day, and just be friends and have a good time,” Mills noted. “In Berlin you drink beer and eat wurst. In New Orleans you eat Cajun food and drink Sazerac. In Nashville we ate a lot of fried chicken.”
