Late in life, even with his vast estate and stake in the Sony Music catalog, Michael Jackson ran into financial trouble. The big tour and record he was preparing for at the time of his death was part of a come back, certainly to satisfy his artistic pursuits but also to alleviate his material woes. In a macabre twist of irony, THR reports that Michael Jackson made more money in death last year than he could have hoped to in life.
He topped Forbes’ The Top-Earning Dead Celebrities list, bringing in more money than all the rest of the celebrities on the list combined (including John Lennon, Elvis Presley, and J.R.R. Tolkien). In fact, he made even more than any living celebrity, aside from Oprah Winfrey.
To put this into greater perspective consider that living and working celebrity, Jay-Z, made over $60 million and his wife Beyonce took in over $80 million. Lady Gaga earned herself $62 million dollars rolling around in sheer bodysuits singing, grating, operatic house music. But the King of Pop brought in more than all of them combined, a staggering $275 million with renewed sales and interest in his music, along with help from the film “This Is It.”
