Sony Online Entertainment’s long-gestating superhero MMO still needs a bit more time in the oven and announced that it won’t be coming out until early 2011. Playable on PC and PS3, “DC Universe Online” lets players build their own metahuman with a mix-and-match suite of paranomal abilities. You’ll then decide to tear up the universe or help save it alongside recognizable characters like Batman, Lex Luthor or Green Lantern. The game’s framing gets explained in the cinematic trailer below, which is a doozy.
Disappointed fans will get to try out for the game’s external beta, though. The external Beta program will begin the week of October 11, 2010. If you’ve already got a VIP key card registered at the “DCUO” website, then you’ll automatically get a beta key. AFolks who’ve pre-ordered before November 15, 2010 should receive a beta key by the end of November. Any pre-orders after that date will only get beta access for the week preceding the game’s release. Without pre-ordering, gamers can try for the Beta by going to http://www.dcuniverseonline.com/en/beta/ and registering. There’s no guarantee of beta access doing it that way, though.
Once the beta’s underway, SOE will evaluate the game and announce a new release date. “DC Universe Online” features tons of DC Comics talent working on the game, including designs by artist and DC co-publisher Jim Lee, story input by DC creative guru Geoff Johns and dialogue by legendary writer Marv Wolfman. Whenever the game comes, it should be worth the wait.
