There are lots of Lifetime Achievement Awards out there. But only one comes in the form of a deadly weapon, and that’s the Fantastic Fest Lifetime Achievement Award. To commemorate a filmmaker’s outstanding career, Fantastic Fest gives out swords, I guess so they can keep the young whippersnappers looking to replace them at bay for a few more years. This year’s award was bestowed upon master martial arts choreographer and director Yuen Woo-ping who, as you’ll see in our video coverage below, immediately began using his “award” as an instrument of destruction. The deliverer of this award was none other than The RZA from Wu Tang Clan, who, as a lifelong fan of martial arts films in general and Yuen Woo-ping films in particular, seemed genuinely excited to get to hang out with his hero.
While we spoke on the red carpet, RZA also told me his three favorite martial arts films of 2010: “Ong Bak 3,” “Ip Man 2,” and Yuen’s own “True Legend,” which screened at Fantastic Fest as part of the celebration of his incredible career. Here’s our full report:
