Set in the Parisian underworld of the 21st Century, Christian Volckman’s Renaissance is a classic noir thriller crafted out of groundbreaking and dynamic black-and-white animation. Placing a hard-boiled detective, a kidnapped dame, and a sinister corporation in a landscape littered with murder, intrigue and dark secrets, Renaissance would do Raymond Chandler proud.
When scientist Ilona Tasuiev is kidnapped, tough cop Barthelemy Karas (voiced by Daniel Craig) is given the task of finding her. The trail leads to Avalon, a mega-pharmaceutical corporation with sinister ties . Ilona was working on a cure and Karas is convinced her research is the key to her kidnapping. He is assisted in the search for the missing scientist by her lusty sister and her mentor, Jonas Muller (Ian Holm).
Renaissance was made over a period of five years using an animation technique known as ‘motion capture’ that involves photographing live actors and translating their actions to the screen. The look is startling beautiful and complex. Presented in complete monochrome the film looks almost like a cross between a graphic novel and a woodcut print. Renaissance came out the same year as Richard Linklater’s “A Scanner Darkly” meaning that 2006 was a banner year for feature-length animation. ‘Renaissance’ airs on IFC at 5:55 p.m. ET
