When I asked Robert Rodriguez about the score for “Predators” and he replied that it was “pretty straight action-horror music,” I was a bit deflated at first. I guess I was hoping for some wild tale of how he played guitar with Danny Trejo in the jungle with Laurence Fishburne on rain sticks or something.
I have matured somewhat since then though, and seen some footage of a scoring session for the film that has me sold. Composer John Debney has worked with Rodriguez many times (on his “Spy Kids” and “Sin City” franchises). Debney, who got his start scoring Disney stuff for TV in the late 70’s and early 80’s not only brings this competent “straight action-horror music” to life but manages to conjure the most freaked out parts of the original Alan Silvestri score in the right way as well.
