Contrary to the subject matter of their film, the cast of “Winter’s Bone” were all smiles at the Sundance premiere of the film at the Eccles Theater in Park City. Joining director Debra Granik on the red carpet were the film’s stars Jennifer Lawrence, Dale Dickey, John Hawkes, Kevin Breznahan, Casey Maclaren and Lauren Sweester. Granik has an eye for talent — her last film, “Down to the Bone,” provided a breakout role for Vera Farmiga — so these names and faces are worth remembering.
“Winter’s Bone” tells the story of Ree Dolly, a young woman caring for her siblings and ailing mother in the Ozarks. When Ree’s father is arrested for cooking meth, he puts the family home up for bail and then flees the authorities. To keep her family from being forced out in to the cold, Ree must pursue her father through treacherous back country and confront a trail of dangerous relatives also complicit in the drug business.
