It’s not unusual for an independent music video to take place in a venue of pop-cultural leisure (i.e., roller rink, pizza parlor, bowling alley, movie theater). Actually it’s quite common and expected these days (renting out a well-lit soundstage isn’t in most indie labels’ budgets). In The Black Keys’ new clip, “Strange Times”, Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney take their unique skills into a neighborhood laser tag hall. Aesthetically, it looks like your typical indie video, however The Black Keys (as they’ve been known to do from time to time) add their own humorous twist by playing laser tag against each other with “real” lasers. The pseudo-panic that ensues is pure comedic gold. The video can be seen HERE.
In keeping with the laser tag theme, go to the band’s website to compete in a desktop version of the game. All of this neon-glitzed ballyhoo is for The Black Keys’ latest album, Attack and Release (produced by Danger Mouse), which comes out Tuesday, April 1.
NOTE: Obviously, I don’t encourage anyone to open fire with “real” lasers at your local neighborhood Laser Storm (nor would I encourage you to start a pie fight at the corner bakery).
