Tonight at 8PM, Terminal 5 in New York City will host the annual Plug Independent Music Awards. Think Grammy Awards with an Independent twist–all artists, albums, songs, and videos nominated must have been released from an independent record label (i.e., record labels not owned by Universal, Sony BMG, EMI, Warner).
The Plug Advisory board (which is made up of 250-300 authorities in independent culture) select the nominees in each category. Following the nomination process, voting is opened up to the public.
I actually like the Plug Awards voting process, because you’re only allowed to send one batch of votes per e-mail address. This prevents any computer savvy kid (or computer savvy indie label for that matter) from getting a software program and voting endlessly for their favorite artists. Obviously it’s not fool proof, but it makes it more difficult to vote multiple times.
The show is sold-out, but there will be a live webcast here.
