Score one for the bloggers (pro though they may be) — Steve Pond at the LA Times’ Oscarbeat seems to be first on the scene with the news that Jon Stewart will host this year’s Oscars, though the Academy has yet to confirm. Like much of America, we harbor a raging crush on Stewart, but we have to admit to feeling some trepidation, because when has anyone come across as anything other than "not that bad…mostly" when hosting this most gilded of awards shows? Is there such thing as a "really great Academy Awards host"? Poor David Letterman. Poor defanged Chris Rock. But at least this means they’ll be no Billy Crystal-sung opening medley…ah. And we’ll leave the last word to Mr. Pond:
Stewart, who was born Jonathan Stewart Liebowitz, once told "60 Minutes" that he dropped the name Liebowitz because it "sounded too Hollywood."
Sorry, Jon. Can’t get much more Hollywood than this new gig of yours.
