Via this morning’s Variety (which we actually snagged a paper copy of, so no link), Paramount (the new insidious entertainment stronghold?) and Nickelodeon Movies are developing a CG version of "The Smurfs."
Producers have conceived the project as a trilogy and aim to release the first film in 2008 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Smurfs.
Herb Ratner will write the script — "Storyline is being kept under wraps."
So, my darling Gen Y, we have John Woo working on "He-Man," Michael Bay doing "The Transformers," and no less than the Weinstein Company working with animator Kevin Munroe on a CG "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles." We’d like to take a moment to pre-emptively fantasy-cast a (doubtless soon to be announced) "Thundercats" movie:
Lion-O: Hugh Jackman (too easy?)
Panthro: Ving Rhames
Tygra: Dominic Purcell
Cheetara: Charlize Theron
WilyKit: Dakota Fanning
WilyKat: Haley Joel Osment
Snarf (CG, clearly): Robin Williams
Mumm-Ra: Jeremy Irons
Wow, there was an hour well spent. Oscar gold, yes? Anyone who wants to take us away from all this for a cushy casting agent job (high-six, and you’ll have to set us up someplace a damn sight better than some Residence Inn in El Segundo) drop us a line.
