Most people equate football with head injuries, which is actually pretty accurate. But the sport has also produced a number of athletes that have made a name for themselves in some pretty hilarious roles once they left the field. Before you catch pigskin great Eddie George on this week’s Comedy! Bang! Bang!, here are six of our favorite comedic roles played by a former football legend.
6. Bubba Smith, Police Academy
The former NFL defensive end had a number of comedy roles after he retired, but none more famous than that of Hightower in the Police Academy franchise. Seriously, if we saw this guy coming, we would confess to anything just out of sheer terror.
5. Carl Weathers, Happy Gilmore
Sure, everyone knows Weathers for his portrayal of Apollo Creed, but the former NFL and CFL linebacker showed off his comedy chops as Chubbs in Happy Gilmore.
4. Sam Jones, Flash Gordon
Some of you may think that Flash Gordon is a superhero movie and not a comedy. Clearly anyone who shares that opinion has never witnessed the fight scene in this camp classic.
3. Terry Crews, White Chicks
With roles in everything from Bridesmaids to Old Spice commercials, Crews’ acting career has surpassed anything he did during his NFL days.
2. John Matuszak, Goonies
Matuszak’s NFL career was often overshadowed by his hard partying ways off the field. However, everything changed when he played Sloth, the lovable, Baby Ruth-eating hero in Goonies.
1. Alex Karras, Blazing Saddles
Karras was once known as one of the most feared defensive tackles in the NFL. His role as Mongo in Blazing Saddles proved that the ex-Detroit Lion could make audiences roar with laughter. Unlike everything he did in Webster.
