A Sad Day in Political News

Tim Russert died suddenly today at the Washington D. C. bureau of NBC News in the middle on an election in which his coverage has been indispensable. Russert stood alone in unifying highly skilled journalism with a gentlemanly charm that rendered the fiercest politicians defenseless. He informed citizens of the complexities of electoral politics without compromise or condescension. "Meet The Press" was essential viewing for journalists of every ilk and a Sunday ritual akin to church. His reporting on matters at home and abroad set a standard for television news. Russert's joy for the work was never more evident than during the 2000 election. As people stayed up the entire night, confused and frustrated, he cheerfully explained the arcane rules of the electoral college with a dry erase board and marker, reassuring voters left, right and center. Appearing before him became mandatory for politicians, who dreaded his pointed questions and sought his respect. They were reduced to stutters and nervous giggles if unprepared yet few would argue they were treated unfairly. At a time when much of the press is as partisan as their subjects and news is designed for high ratings with short attention spans, Russert maintained a thorough and principled approach to journalism with benevolent civility. His interviews with the 2008 candidates have been critical to the dialogue about what's at stake in this election. We will all suffer from the absence of his unsparing and ebullient reporting.
