"Video killed the radio star..." I'm sure everyone has heard that famous line/song. Well, I got a new one for you: "Internet killed the porno star!" I may sound like a radical lunatic, but I really think the internet will lead to the downfall of life as we know it. I could go on and on about the generic evils of a computer-driven society, but I won't. That's not what I am here to do. I will leave that to the crazy homeless man with the wine breath and cardboard sign down on Main Street. Instead, I will just focus on my area of expertise: PORNO!
I guess it is human nature to destroy things...especially the ones you would think we would want to protect: our bodies, our love lives, our planet, and forms of entertainment that we love. We have virtually
all but destroyed the music industry with illegal downloading and burning of cds. Not only have the musicians themselves suffered, but so have people who work at the recording labels. I'm sure you have
all heard about the many mass lay-offs at many of the top companies. And how many people do you think lost their jobs when places like Tower Records went out of business?
Movie theaters and rental stores like Blockbuster are closing down left and right. Why? Because people are too lazy to drive to the store and too cheap to pay for the product. Instead, they will just have their buddy "rip it" for them. Sure, in the short term you are saving that 3.99 rental fee, but in the end you will cost yourself the quality of entertainment you have become accustomed to having. And everyone knows that "shit runs downhill." Stealing product (which is exactly what pirating and filesharing is) does not just affect the artist. It affects all the employees that work for the company that produces the product. This ranges from the secretary who takes the phone orders to the production team who engineers the product to the warehouse workers that package it to the drivers of the trucks that deliver it to the stores. At the store, you have stockers and sales clerks...you get the idea...
Well, of course all of this pirating and file sharing also impacts the adult business. DVD sales are down and most of the companies are suffering. Many have done away with contract stars and features completely. Those few which are still producing plot-driven movies have started to cut budgets thus affecting the quality. This means in the near future, I will not only be unable to continue directing and performing in the kind of product that I enjoy and am so proud of, but that I may not have a job at all. This is heartbreaking because I adore my job at Wicked Pictures.
I cannot tell you how devastated and angry I was when I found "Operation Desert Stormy" in its three-hour entirety for free online the VERY DAY it had been released! Upon search, I also found EVERY movie I had I ever done on various sites (which I will not list for obvious reasons)! I poured so much of my blood, sweat, and tears (and some of my own money) into making "Operation Desert Stormy" the best movie possible that it was heart wrenching to see it pirated. This would negatively affect sales and possibly mean the movie (and me) would be considered a failure.
Furious, I contacted my attorney and the authorities. The latter of which was completely uninterested in
aiding me in any capacity since it's "just porn". Most of these illegal sites bounce off foreign servers making them almost impossible for my attorney to do anything about. It would require our government contacting their's and I just established that was not going to happen. But I can pretty much guarantee that if my last name was Spielberg instead of Daniels, they would have been all over it! Now don't get it twisted...I'm not claiming to be as good as Spielberg, I'm just saying stealing is stealing.
Now I know most of you still think downloading a video here or there won't hurt the big bad porn companies since they make "billions" every year. I am not even going waste my time justifying your ignorance by arguing with that statement. Well, what about the individual performers? It is not just the movies getting copied, it is also the photos and exclusive clips on the girls' websites. Many of the performers have personal sites to supplement their income and we have to pay to maintain and produce content for these sites. Everytime we put up something new, some asshole copies it and splashes it everywhere for free. Since the business is then no longer as lucrative, the girls (at least the hot ones that you'd want to see naked) are leaving the industry in droves.
I recently completely redesigned and relaunched my website: StormyDaniels.com. I have been busy coming up with cool new ways to interact with my members and even purchased a new house that will be better for live shows/chats. I have also been busy shooting new stuff for the member section. Obviously, none of this was cheap
for me to do. Part of me is even wondering if it is worth it...I'm dreading putting up all my cool new stuff since I know some dickhead is just going to steal it.
Obviously, if you are still reading this you are a fan of pornography. I am begging you (yes I am on my hands and knees and making my cute face) to stop downloading our movies and/or photos from rogue sites. PLEASE don't burn your buddy a copy of your favorite movie. PLEASE don't hack our sites. If you really were our "fan", you would stop destroying our industry. OH...and if you happen to see a blonde homeless person with a huge rack and waving a cardboard sign about saving the porno industry, could you please bring me a Starbucks? Thanks...
