Ten Milestones in French Cinema
1929 - "Un Chien Andalou": Buñuel, Dali and the Surrealists
It was only a matter of time before that intoxicated rebellion known as the Surrealist art movement would expand into cinema. And though there were Surrealist films prior to this collaboration between first-time filmmaker Luis Buñuel and painter Salvador Dali, none would have as lasting and powerful an impact on cinema's history, mostly due to its now-iconic but still-shocking razor to the eyeball sequence. Legend has it that Buñuel and Dali filled their pockets with rocks in anticipation of an audience attack. However, the film was well received and played continually for eight consecutive months.
