Ten Milestones in French Cinema
1951 - Cahiers du Cinéma is launched
Film critic and theorist André Bazin launches what will go on to become the most distinguished and influential film magazine in the world, Cahiers du Cinema (Cinema Notebooks). Many future filmmakers began as Cahiers writers, including Jean-Luc Godard, Francois Truffaut, Jacques Rivette and Eric Rohmer. Pioneers of the auteur theory of film criticism, the magazine has played a significant role in legitimizing cinema as a field of study.
