Movie Dads, Good and Bad
Posted 07/26/2010 910 AM by Alison Willmore
As a bookend to our March podcast on the spectrum of movie mothers, this week's IFC News podcast is all the common archetypes of on-screen dads, from the understanding to the demanding to the emotionally distant. We also discuss some of the feedback to last week's review of "Inception" and analysis of Christopher Nolan's films to date. Following the Prestigious Mementos of Christopher Nolan's Career
Posted 07/19/2010 940 AM by Alison Willmore
"Inception" may be the best (non-animated) blockbuster of the summer, but that's hardly setting the bar very high. Is Christopher Nolan's latest a masterpiece, a disappointment or somewhere in between? In this week's (spoiler-filled, super-sized) IFC News podcast, we talk about "Inception," then trace common themes from that film through Nolan's career to date. Beauty is Truth, Movies are Fiction
Posted 07/05/2010 1000 AM by Alison Willmore
One of enduring pleasures of the movies is that they're a place to gaze at people who are larger and more beautiful than real life. And while there's always been artifice involved in maintaining that illusion, has technology -- HD, digital effects, and, for that matter, more prevalent plastic surgery -- changed the degree to which that's the case? This week's IFC News podcast, inspired by (of all things) the apparent digital airbrushing of Megan Fox in "Jonah Hex," explores whether the studios' quest to efface imperfections from their actors is resulting in an absence of interesting faces on screen. Why Dysfunctional Families Make for Good Movies
Posted 06/28/2010 915 AM by Alison Willmore
As Tolstoy didn't quite write, "Happy families are all alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own movie." Inspired by "Dogtooth," the new, critically acclaimed Greek film featuring what has to be a record-breakingly dysfunctional familial unit, this week's IFC News podcast is all about the movies' fondness for troubled, messed-up, maladjusted and flat-out non-functioning families, from "Five Easy Pieces" to "Happiness." Our Pixar Podcast
Posted 06/21/2010 830 AM by Alison Willmore
With "Toy Story 3," Pixar seems to have created the increasingly rare film that pleases the crowds and the critics alike, children and adults, cinephiles and casual moviegoers just looking for a good time. This week on the IFC News podcast, we talk about Pixar's 15 years of feature film output (not to mention their often incredible shorts), point out some common themes, highlights, lowlights, and whether it's fair to treat the studio as an unusual type of auteur. All About Antiheroes
Posted 06/14/2010 400 PM by Alison Willmore
Lou Ford, the protagonist of "The Killer Inside Me," cuts a violent swath through his home town while we ride with him the whole way down. Inspired by the film, this week's IFC News podcast takes on antiheroes at the movies, looking at how they've become so prevalent that it's rarer to see a classic hero and dividing them up into different categories, from reluctant leaders to criminals who follow their own code to charismatic psychopaths. Against Conventional Wisdom
Posted 06/07/2010 845 AM by Alison Willmore
Are remakes always awful? Is 3D doomed to forever remain just another gimmick to gouge more money out of theater-goers? Do only losers go to the movies alone? We're feeling contrarian on this week's IFC News podcast, in which we answers these pressing questions and many others based on popular internet wisdom, and find ourselves unexpectedly arguing for the plus sides of digital projection, seeing a film on DVD and not staying too close to the auteur theory. Urban Legends in (and of) the Movies
Posted 05/31/2010 1200 PM by Alison Willmore
"Cropsey," a documentary about the intersection of an urban legend about a menacing boogeyman with a real child murder case that took place in Staten Island, opens this Friday in New York. The film got us thinking about where cinema in general meets up with the modern mythology we pass around -- which is why this week on the IFC News podcast, we talk about urban legends in (and of) the movies, from getting straight As if your college roommate commits suicide to the supposed body swinging in the background of a scene of "The Wizard of Oz." Let's Get Physical (Comedy)
Posted 05/24/2010 1130 AM by Alison Willmore
"Micmacs," the new film from "Amelie" director Jean-Pierre Jeunet, may be set in modern day Paris, but stylistically it's a throwback to older movies -- particularly silent comedies and slapstick, with its elaborate, near wordless set pieces. "Micmacs" provided the inspiration for this week's podcast, in which we talk about physical comedy, apparently both the highest and lowest form of comedy. We've picked out ten famous physical comedians, from Chaplin to Carrey, in order to highlight one of our favorites scenes from each. Live From New York, They're SNL Movies
Posted 05/17/2010 830 AM by Alison Willmore
This week's "MacGruber" is one of the best "Saturday Night Live" movies ever made. Of course, given the competition, that's not saying very much. It's not easy to take a five minute sketch and turn it into a 90 minute feature and we know it's not easy because almost every time Lorne Michaels and the talented comedians from "SNL" have tried it, they've failed. This week on the IFC News podcast, we get in and out of an ultra-sticky situation, ranking the "Saturday Night Live" spinoff movies from the best ("The Blues Brothers!" "Wayne's World!") to the worst (Just about READ MORE »
