Trailering: Sylvain Chomet's "The Illusionist"
Posted 07/28/2010 600 PM by Matt Singer
There's a lot of good movies to look forward to at this year's Toronto Film Festival but if I had to pick just one that I'm most excited to see it would be "The Illusionist" from "Triplets of Belleville" director Sylvain Chomet. The £10 million budgeted film, based on a screenplay by Jacques Tati, is (according to the official Toronto Film Festival synopsis), "the story of a magician pushed aside by rock and roll who finds one young girl who appreciates his magic." Though a Russian trailer for the film has been floating around the Interwebs for a while, the READ MORE »

"Give Me a Little More of That!" Filmmakers' Advice On How To Shoot Sex Scenes
Posted 07/28/2010 330 PM by Matt Singer
AskMen.com solicited advice on how to shoot a sex tape from director Tommy Wiseau. Wiseau responded with tips he used while shooting the sex scenes from his cult hit "The Room". "You need certain chemistry." said Wiseau. "I believe that Johnny and Lisa in The Room had great chemistry, that's my take. Yes, maybe some of the stuff -- people have different opinions -- but how you define making love to anybody?" All right, so unless you want to make a sex tape that looks like this, Wiseau's ten suggestions might not be particularly helpful. And maybe he's not the READ MORE »

Grinderman, "Heathen Child"
Posted 07/28/2010 109 PM by Brandon Kim
Nick Cave is a busy man outside the Bad Seeds, writing screenplays, and when not scoring films with Warren Ellis, the two are ripping it as Grinderman with bandmates Martyn Casey and Jim Sclavunos. Grinderman will release their second studio album, Grinderman 2, via Mute on September 13th and via Anti- Records in the U.S. on September 14th. They released a stream of this growling, carnal single "Heathen Child," which gets a release ahead of the full album on September 6th. A further limited edition double A-side 12" Coloured Vinyl will offer the two single tracks, a poster, plus the READ MORE »

Paul Dano is Sitting Pretty
Posted 07/28/2010 1030 AM by Aaron Hillis
When he's in his birthplace of New York City, actor Paul Dano says he's most recognized for playing Daniel Day-Lewis's evangelical nemesis, whose proverbial "milkshake" of oil gets drained in "There Will Be Blood." Outside of major cities, the 26-year-old is more instantly familiar as the mute Nietzschean road-tripper from lighter Best Picture Oscar nominee, "Little Miss Sunshine." And one time recently, at an ice creamery in Brooklyn (where he currently lives), a delighted scooper spotted him from one of her favorite films, "The Ballad of Jack and Rose." It's a credit to Dano's gifts that he can shine in READ MORE »

Deconstructing Angelina Jolie
Posted 07/28/2010 1000 AM by Charles Taylor
Is there a movie star that the public is more wary of than Angelina Jolie? Tom Cruise has become the punchline to an overextended joke. But bring up Jolie in conversation and you're apt to hear something like fear. Beneath the complaints about how weird she is, or the desperate claims she's not that beautiful or talented, or the disapproval over her breaking up Brad Pitt's marriage to Jennifer Aniston, snakes a thin coppery current of unease. It's always been something with Jolie. At first, it was her goth look and her tattoos and her public affection toward her brother. READ MORE »

Talking with Tommy Tallarico, Part 3
Posted 07/28/2010 930 AM by Evan Narcisse
In the final part of my talk with game composer Tommy Tallarico, we chat about the Japanese and U.S. game music markets, and the beginnings of the Video Games Live tour. (See parts one and two.) In Japan, there's a long tradition of soundtrack albums for video games that seem to sell well. Why do you think that hasn't happened here? I would love nothing more than to say that, "Oh yeah, it's such a big business over there." But the reality is that it's actually somewhat of a myth. You can find soundtracks for every single anime that's probably READ MORE »

"The Dungeon Masters" Blonde Redhead Soundtrack and DVD Release
Posted 07/28/2010 900 AM by Brandon Kim
With a new Blonde Redhead release on the horizon, I decided to re-visit "The Dungeon Masters" after a conversation with the film's editor, Christine Khalafian, who kindly reminded me that the NY trio scored it. The doc, which centers on three hardcore D&D players and their troubles during the economic crush of 2008 is getting an expanded edition DVD release August 3 too. You don't have to own dice with more than six sides, have a thing for chicks with elf ears, or have Blonde Redhead on your iPod to appreciate this film and the exceptionally strange people it follows READ MORE »
