MIXTAPE: May Day

By Jim Shearer on 05/01/2009

Happy May Day! Yes, "mayday" can be used as a distress signal, but for many countries around the world, May Day is a joyous holiday that celebrates the social and economic achievements of the labor movement. MORE »

A Flying W in a Haystack

Friday was a bummer. Not only was my weekend flight to Pittsburgh delayed, but it was cancelled altogether--grrrrr. Instead of arriving in the 'burgh at 8:30PM that evening (to attend various family functions for my sister's upcoming wedding), I was told the soonest I could get in was 5:30PM the following day via a connecting flight from Washington DC--grrrrr. IT'S LIKE THAT: Grammy's Highs & Lows

By Jim Shearer on 02/09/2009

Alrighty, so the 51st Grammy Awards are in the books, and fittingly--because it seems like the veterans always get a little extra love at the Grammys--Robert Plant and Alison Kraus took home the crown jewel award of the evening, Album of The Year, for Raising Sand. MORE »

My 10 Favorite Albums of 2008

By Jim Shearer on 12/29/2008
Filed under: '08 WAS GREAT!, LISTS

The following is not a list of the Top-10 Albums of the Year (c'mon, I'm one man, who am I to say if these are the best albums of 2008?), instead, this is simply a list of my Top-10 favorite albums of the year: 10. Girl Talk, Feed The Animals Yes, he's just a mash-up artist, and what can a mash-up artist do besides layer acapellas over well-known instrumentals? Well, if you're Girl Talk you take hundreds and hundreds of not just instrumentals, but bleeps, breaks, and beats and masterfully intertwine them with the naughtiest dirty south rap lyrics you... Favorite Music Videos of '08

By Jim Shearer on 12/26/2008

In all honesty, I don't watch nearly as many music videos these days as I have in the past, but c'mon--we're living in a YouTube world baby--music videos are so last century. That being said, a good music video still does something special to me. Here are my favorites of the past year: Gnarls Barkley, "Who's Gonna Save My Soul?" Not only is the relationship dialogue spot on, but the animated heart--which is literally ripped out of the chest--adds another layer of depth to this fantastic break-up story. I also love the fact that Danger Mouse and Cee-Lo are in... MORE »

ME LIKEY: Christmas With Weezer

By Jim Shearer on 12/17/2008

For those of you who are tired of throwing non-Christmas Weezer songs ("Holiday," "The Greatest Man That Ever Lived") on your yearly holiday mixes, or if you don't want to recycle "The Christmas Song" or "Christmas Celebration" (the two songs Weezer released in 2000 as a special 2-track EP), you'll be happy to know that the band made available yesterday, their 6-song song Christmas With Weezer EP that was originally recorded for the Tap Tap Revenge iPhone game. (left: First the Red Album, than this? What a Weezer-iffic year it's been!) I know it was just yesterday when I... MORE »

Welcome back to the round table (although there's only two of us, so the table doesn't necessarily need to be round) discussion of power-pop-occasionally-Warp-Tour-attending, Ben and indie-minded-see-you at-SXSW-in-March-music-enthusiast, Jim. IT'S LIKE THAT: Highlights For Your Music

By Jim Shearer on 10/30/2008

If anyone has read the Indie Ear blog since it's inception, you should know that I have a not-so-secret obsession with sports. C'mon, pairing indie bands against each other in a NCAA-style tournament didn't give it away? How about when I sketched out drawings of my favorite indie artists posing as 2008 Summer Olympians? (above: Music and sports have more in common than you think.) Though a high school band geek getting bullied by a varsity football player on a daily basis might disagree, music and sports have a lot in common. Both have the ability to inspire, make... MORE »

Weezer Premieres "Troublemaker"

By Jim Shearer on 10/07/2008

Still in the habit of making proper music videos--which may seem like an outdated thing to do in this day in age--Weezer premiered their "Troublemaker" clip yesterday. The band's second video from the Red Album features a giant W-shaped trough filled with nachos, a massive game of dodge ball, a pie-fight, and great big 'ol hootenanny (a bunch of different people, playing a bunch of different instruments). (left: Who's that guy in the hair-net with the neck tattoo? Duh, it's Rivers Cuomo.) Like Weezer's first single, "Pork and Beans"--showcasing various made-at-home internet superstars (which to date has collectively over... MORE »

LIVE: Weezer

Unfortunately, this is going to be the closest I get to Weezer's Troublemaker Tour, which kicked off in Lowell, MA this week. I had to miss the show at Madison Square Garden last night because I'm out of town on special assignment (hint: I was interviewing a drummer for a well-known Bay Area thrash metal band) and I'll miss all the east coast dates this weekend because of a wedding. Weezer Needs Your Help!

This past weekend, Karl Koch, Weezer historian/webmaster, asked Weezer fans to help the band out on their upcoming North Amercian tour, starting September 23 in Boston, MA. Fans have been asked to create original video shorts (5-30 seconds in length) that will play behind the band during their on-stage performances. Koch's official e-mail message reads: MORE »

Weezer Album Cover Memory Test

By Jim Shearer on 06/25/2008

As you may know from recent episodes of Lunchbox or glowing album reviews, I'm a big fan of Weezer. Even though they may have shed their college-rock charm years ago, I still can't help to not obsess about them. I almost feel obliged to apologize, but I won't give you the satisfaction. On their most recent album, and for the fourth time in the history of the band, Weezer appears on their album cover. Because I'm a fan (did I mention that?) I tried to look at all four album covers more closely to see if there was some... MORE »

Weezer's Red Album, I Don't Like It, I Love It!

By Jim Shearer on 06/12/2008

If you haven't noticed, I usually try to steer clear of writing album reviews on the Indie Ear Blog. Music is a very personal thing, so who am I to say if an album sucks or not? I can't tell you how many times I've wanted to take a mic cord and wrap it around a critic's neck for giving a bad review to an album I love. However, today I felt compelled to write a review for Weezer's Red Album, which just came out last week. I absolutely love it! I can't stop listening to it--as soon as... MORE »

Weezer's "The Greatest Man That Ever Lived"

By Jim Shearer on 05/09/2008

I gotta say, I'm loving the recently leaked Weezer song, "The Greatest Man That Ever Lived." It's got ups, it's got downs, it's a musical journey (and the cheering crowd at the beginning even makes it a little epic--dare I say it's Weezer's "Bohemian Rhapsody"). I'm excited for the new album, coming out (legally) on June 24. Thanks for the heads-up Smooth. You're lucky I don't sic the feds on you! (left: This is my friend Jeff, who happens to be such a big Weezer fan that he got their flying =w= logo tattooed on his chest. When he... MORE »
