Last October 31st, Tim Fite treated us to a free digital download of his Halloween-inspired ding dong Ditch EP (as well as re-releasing the previous year's treat, It's Only Ketchup EP). (left: Tim Fite will take care of the broken hearted on February 14.) On Valentine's Day, Fite will conitnue the tradition of giving out free music on second-tier holidays by releasing the free digital download of Change of Heart. If you go to his website on Saturday, February 14, you'll be able to get it for free, one day and one day only. Fite explains: "Change of Heart... MORE »

IT'S LIKE THAT: Songs with St-St-Stutters

Britney Spears' name is not one we bring up often here on the Indie Ear, but I'm not going to lie to you, it does happen from time to time. So if you're against such things, go to your other 5,000 favorite indie music blogs and catch up on all of your favorite redundantly named bands. Anyway, here goes: Right now, I'm going to tell you why I like Britney Spears' current single, "Womanizer" (and before you throw stones, just to listen to me for a second). I like the song, because, it gave me an epiphany. You heard... MORE »

No, no, no, no, I think you misunderstood me. I'm not "anti sampler," I'm talking about the ANTI sampler, a FREE digital download of 17 songs from the record label ANTI. You can download the entire album for free HERE. You'll notice Kool Keith is also on a track, making this the second Indie Ear Kool Keith sighting in as many days. (left: Do free digital albums need album covers? Apparently so.) Anti- Records 08/09 Sampler tracklisting: 1. "Mexico City," Jolie Holland 2. "Pieces Of You," Islands 3. "Say Hey (I Love You),"Michael Franti & Spearhead 4. "Whispers," Lyrics... MORE »

As promised, for one day only, Tim Fite is giving away a free Halloween EP, Ding Dong DITCH, on his website today (as it turns out, he is also making last year's free Halloween EP, It's Only Ketchup, available as well). (left: Have you been a good boy this Halloween?) When you get to Tim Fite's website, make sure you click on the "treat" link and not the "trick" link. MORE »

Another reason to get excited for Halloween this year: Brooklyn-based multi-genrist Tim Fite will release a new free, Halloween-centric recording via his website on October 31st, 2008. Available for one day only, the innovative song cycle entitled ding dong Ditch comes at the culmination of his tour with Man Man and will be celebrated with a special Halloween show at the Starlight Ballroom in Philadelphia. Fite says "I will be handing out more candy on Halloween this year, and all the bad kids are excited!!!"... MORE »

Man Man and Man-Child

By Jim Shearer on 09/25/2008

The non-stop, musical live experience known as Man Man will re-open shop this weekend at Austin City Limits (Austin, TX). The band will tour through October, playing a handful of dates with politically minded man-child, Tim Fite. Should be a uniquely awesome, frighteningly fun tour! LIVE: Hideout Block Party

By James Ziegenfus on 09/24/2008

It's been a nice, long summer in Chicago. There are street fairs and music festivals nearly every weekend from May through September. But the unofficial end of summer music in the Windy City is typically the Hideout Block Party. (left: Monotonix engages the crowd by playing drums right on top of them.) In a dead end alley leading to the Department of Fleet Management, the Hideout takes the show outside for its block party that's moved from the street into a nearby parking lot for big events in recent years, such as 2006's Touch & Go 25th Anniversary. This... MORE »

The Week That Was (and Still Is), May 4-10

By Jim Shearer on 05/09/2008
Filed under: THE WEEK THAT WAS (AND STILL IS)

The week began with another big festival, Bamboozle, which took place outside Giants Stadium's parking lot in New Jersey. My sister-in-law's brother, Ben, and his friend, Paul, were in town for the concert festivities, so on Friday night I picked their brains. I was glad to get the Bamboozle update, surprised to find out that Snoop Dogg would be headlining one of the nights, but honestly, I don't think I could have swung the festival. Two days of predominantly emo-driven music in a football stadium parking lot is an endurance test that I don't think I'm in shape for... MORE »

In celebration of Tim Fite's new album, Fair Ain't Fair, which was just released today, here's an interview I had with Tim Fite and Dr. Leisure at this year's SXSW: The flash 8 plugin was not detected. var so = new SWFObject("/static/bc/ifc_generic_blog.swf", "cinemaeye", "380", "295", "8", "#ffffff"); so.addParam("wmode", "transparent"); //change player width so.addVariable("pwidth", 380); //change player height so.addVariable("pheight", 285); //distinguish between different videos so.addVariable("s_movieID", "cinemaeye"); //insert brightcove title id here so.addVariable("bctid", 1507768528); so.write("cinemaeye"); MORE »

TALK: Tim Fite

By Jim Shearer on 04/28/2008

Next week, alternative-hip-hop-country twanger Tim Fite will release his brand new album, Fair Ain't Fair (Anti-). Over the last couple years Fite has been wowing critics with both his full-length debut album, Gone Ain't Gone, and his free-to-the-public, hip-hop album, Over The Counter Culture--which was chock full of thoughtful wit and social commentary. (left: The hilarious, is-he-being-serious, is-he-not-being serious Tim Fite.) Fite has developed a Pee Wee Herman-like talent for disguising his messages behind scribbled artwork and childlike behavior. Once you figure out what the big kid is up to, you realize he isn't so childish after all.... MORE »

INDIE EAR MADNESS: Tim Fite Shocks Gnarls Barkley in Sweet-16!

By Jim Shearer on 03/28/2008

EAST REGION 1 Vampire Weekend vs. 4 Nada Surf A battle of New York Indie was on display tonight--uptown vs. downtown, young upstarts vs. rock veterans. Vampire Weekend sounded tight again (as they have in the first two rounds). In the end, youth won out. Vampire Weekend squeaks through into the next round. 11 Tim Fite (left) vs. 2 Gnarls Barkley The clock refuses to strike midnight for the Cinderella-story of the tournament, Tim Fite. Unbelievably he pulled off another upset victory tonight! Gnarls Barkley looked confused throughout the match-up. In the first half, Danger Mouse arrived on stage... MORE »

Tomorrow afternoon the 64-band Indie Ear Madness tournament will begin. Only one independent/indie-minded music act will be left standing following the fierce competition. Don't forget to print out your brackets and follow the action daily. Competing this year, we have a handful of veteran acts as well as many up-and-coming new talents. Radiohead come into the tourney as this year's favorites, but upstarts, Vampire Weekend, Gnarls Barkley, and Tapes 'N Tapes are looking to bring home their first National Title. Here's a look at some intriguing first round match-ups:... MORE »

SXSW: Day #3

By Jim Shearer on 03/14/2008

BREAKING WEATHER REPORT: For the first time all week, the sun came out in full force. Temperatures are nearing the 90's--alas, warm weather in Austin, TX! Ah, a good night's sleep, it's first time I logged more than five hours the whole trip. This morning I also got to eat breakfast and sort through my SXSW goodie bag for the first time. I've got my second wind! On the bummer-end of things, Nada Surf and Billy Bragg had to cancel our interviews scheduled this week. No hard feelings though, since I'm sure their schedules are pretty packed at this point... MORE »

SXSW: Tim Fite (Live)

By Jim Shearer on 03/14/2008

Folky-country-hip-hopper, Tim Fite looks and acts like a big, little kid (think Pee Wee Herman with a rounder face). Tonight he was backed by only band member, and performed all of his songs to a backing track that synced up to a movie screen displaying various childlike, storybook images (damn, this is going to be a tough one to explain). On other songs, Fite would perform with three other versions of himself on the screen. Lost yet? Fite's live show is his own unique vision of Pee Wee's Playhouse and Captain Kangaroo. Everything is broken down into childhood terms... MORE »
