Blakroc: The Black Keys and a really tough crew

By Brandon Kim on 11/10/2009

The Ohio-based dirty, filthy blues duo Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney, known as The Black Keys, have set up shop in Brooklyn with one tough crew of hip hop legends to create the super group, Blakroc. Legends like Wu Tang's RZA and the late Ol' Dirty Bastard, Raekwon, Q-Tip, Ludacris, Pharoahe Monch, M.O.P.'s Billy Danze, and Mos Def. It's silly. They got a web series on the whole project, The Blakroc Sessions that I highly recommend. The music is good and the process of these players is worth the watch. Of course, shit is hilarious too, what with all the... MORE »

INDIE EAR MADNESS '09: National Championship

By Jim Shearer on 04/07/2009
Filed under: INDIE EAR MADNESS '09

Three weeks ago, Indie Ear Madness '09 began with 64 of the best indie-minded/respected bands in the land. After some fierce and furious competition, TV On The Radio and The Bouncing Souls were the only two acts left standing. Last night they went head to head, competing not only for the 2009 National Championship, but for indie music bragging rights, which (you'd think) would at least guarantee them a free shot of espresso in any non-chain coffee shop in America. Favorite Music Videos of '08

By Jim Shearer on 12/26/2008

In all honesty, I don't watch nearly as many music videos these days as I have in the past, but c'mon--we're living in a YouTube world baby--music videos are so last century. That being said, a good music video still does something special to me. Here are my favorites of the past year: Gnarls Barkley, "Who's Gonna Save My Soul?" Not only is the relationship dialogue spot on, but the animated heart--which is literally ripped out of the chest--adds another layer of depth to this fantastic break-up story. I also love the fact that Danger Mouse and Cee-Lo are in... MORE »

IT'S LIKE THAT: Highlights For Your Music

By Jim Shearer on 10/30/2008

If anyone has read the Indie Ear blog since it's inception, you should know that I have a not-so-secret obsession with sports. C'mon, pairing indie bands against each other in a NCAA-style tournament didn't give it away? How about when I sketched out drawings of my favorite indie artists posing as 2008 Summer Olympians? (above: Music and sports have more in common than you think.) Though a high school band geek getting bullied by a varsity football player on a daily basis might disagree, music and sports have a lot in common. Both have the ability to inspire, make... MORE »

INDIE ROCK OLYMPIC SKETCHES: The Black Keys

WHO: The Black Keys SPORT: Kayak Pairs WHY: In a rock world dominated by trios, quartets, and quintets, the duo of Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney have held their own. If they can thrive in the world of indie rock music with just two members, imagine the damage they'd do in Kayak Pairs. MORE »

New American Music Union Day #1 Recap

By Jim Shearer on 08/09/2008

With three music festivals to chose from this weekend--All Points West (Jersey City, NJ), Virgin Mobile (Baltimore), New American Music Union (Pittsburgh, PA)--I decided to attend the latter, just for the fact that I was heading back to Pittsburgh anyway to compete in a golf/fishing/corn-hole triathlon. I was only able to catch the first night of the New American Music Union Festival, which was the obvious appetizer course (Tiny Masters Of Today, NASA, The Black Keys, and The Roots) for the festival's second day (Bob Dylan, The Raconteurs, Gnarls Barkley, Spoon).... Black Keys: From Dan's House to MySpace

By Jim Shearer on 05/02/2008

According to The Black Keys' myspace page, the blues-rock twosome recorded a cover of Captain Beefheart's "I'm Glad" at lead singer's Dan Auerbach's house yesterday--and then immediately posted it online. (left: In between recording a Captain Beefheart cover and posting it on their myspace page, The Black Keys take a second to grab a cup of coffee.) The clip image, next to the download on their myspace profile, reads: Oh Yes! It's Free Joe G., our resident Black Keys' authority, claims the download will only be available until May 9. The Black Keys were also featured on New York... MORE »
