1991: The Year Punk Broke

I tend to lean more Paul McCartney than J Mascis, but early 90's rock has a special place in my somewhat charred heart. So it was with great joy I went up to the Walter Reade theater in Manhattan last night for a screening of Dave Markey's tour documentary, "1991: The Year Punk Broke." Remember when Nirvana was still new, before they were blasting incessantly from frat house windows across the country? I'd never seen it before, and if it was off my radar, maybe it was off yours too. Set during a tour through Europe with Nirvana and Dinosaur... MORE »

LOST TREASURES: Judgment Night Soundtrack

By Jim Shearer on 01/28/2009

Think of Judgment Night--the original motion picture soundtrack from an Emilio Estevez film that didn't do so well at the box office--as the stepchild of Run-D.M.C. and Aerosmith's "Walk This Way." In 1993 (the year the album was released) it wasn't unheard of to hear rhymes behind rock riffs. Even the hip-hoppers mentioned above were doing it long before they crossed paths with Steven Tyler. But Judgment Night maintains its place in history because it fell between two periods in music where mixing your rock and rap was acceptable, and mixing your rock and rap was frowned upon (see... IS IT ME? OR...

...does this tote bag design really suck? You'll notice that it's a SXSW 2008 bag, so yes, this rant is probably seven months too late, but while sitting in front of a computer all day in complete solitude, all types of random thoughts will cross one's mind. (left: I'll bet you a quarter YOU could draw better than this.) My wife has always been good about using the free swag I've received over the years, and while blogging yesterday I looked down at the floor and noticed her SXSW tote bag. After looking at it for a couple seconds,... MORE »

Sonic Youth Go Back Home

By Jim Shearer on 09/10/2008

Sonic Youth, a band synonymous with indie music, is once again, officially independent. Having fulfilled all of their contractual obligations with the Universal Music Group--their last major release being Rather Ripped (2006)--Sonic Youth will release their 16th studio album through Matador Records. (left: You can now call Sonic Youth an "indie" band without any hesitation.) This is somewhat of a big deal, because Sonic Youth has now come full circle. Throughout the 80's, Sonic Youth were an indie phenomenon, and quite amazingly, inked a major label deal with DGC in 1990, which gave them--an experimental-noise-rock-art-act--complete creative control! Being called... MORE »

Back to the 90's

Every so often my wife reminds me that I'm stuck in the 90's. I'm sure my love for the decade has also seeped through on many of my blog postings--this one is no different. One of my best friends (who I actually met in the 90's) sent me the link to the following 90's mixtape, Radio Friendly Unit Shifter. Besides some crossfades and tickle scratches, there's not a whole of mixtape parlor tricks going on here, nevertheless, the shot selection is near perfect and quite generous (38 tracks). The 90's nostalgia is also heightened with the use of many... MORE »
